I is for IGNORANCE

I have to say, I wholeheartedly agree with the old adage that ignorance is indeed bliss. I happily, nay, proudly, admit that I am ignorant. Ignorant to current affairs, ignorant to goings on in the ‘celeb’ world, and ignorant to what is or what is not a ‘real’ word or saying.

I thought David Blunkett looked shifty because of his eyes always averting the gaze of the camera, only to later discover he is in fact blind. I was baffled by Kylie’s radical new hairstyle before being told that she was actually suffering from cancer. I believe that ‘bargainacious’ and ‘hojla’ are words because I say they are. If they communicate a meaning that can be understood, then surely it is perfectly acceptable vocabulary? I think that ‘giddy as a fish’ is a popular saying, and that the end slice of bread is called the heel, apparently 99% of the world call it the crust!

Fools!

My point, however, is that I was happier before being corrected. I was more content believing my own assumptions, thinking that my viewpoint was right and I was a purveyor of the truth. Now I feel marginalised, almost discriminated against. I feel I could sue someone or something for defamation of character or for making me feel stupid. I want to revel in my ignorance, not feel guilty for coining new terms or blagging my way through sayings and proverbs.

I do not, however, condone total general ignorance. I am no racist. You will not find me using inappropriate language on live television only to tell my story in the nation’s favourite gossip mag and declare that I am not getting paid for this interview but am donating the fee to anti racism causes.

Anyway, getting sidetracked there.

I am not ignorant about general knowledge, I know the capitals of more than five countries, I know how to spell, and I know who the Prime Minister is… unfortunately, I happen to feel that the more you know, the more uncomfortable you can feel, the more you feel you need to share with the world and the more people will expect of you.

I am happy knowing what I know, believing what I believe in and thinking my own thoughts.

Yes I am ignorant to certain things, aren’t we all, and isn’t ignorance bliss?
